COVID-19 End-of-Lease Process Impact

Due to the current situation with COVID-19 around the country, Honda Financial Services (HFS) has developed a list of scenarios and options for customers whose lease is scheduled to end during this time. We understand that some customers may not be able to return their vehicles due to dealership closures or the inability to visit the dealership due to being under quarantine.

The following options are available to lessees from HFS:

  • 15 day grace period after maturity date for vehicle return
  • No paperwork required for up-to-60-day payment deferral requests
  • Lease extensions may be available

In addition, HFS advises lessees of the following:

  • Lessees should keep insurance and registration on vehicle current
  • Lessee should contact their local DMV and insurance company for additional financial considerations

Specific Scenarios

1. Your dealership is closed or is unable to accept vehicle returns.

A. Contact HFS to discuss options:

  • HFS will allow up to a 15-day grace period after the maturity date, offer a payment deferral, or a lease contract extension.
  • HFS recommends keeping the insurance and registration on the vehicle current.

B. If you want to return vehicle at maturity rather than extend the contract, contact HFS to discuss options:

  • HFS will check if another dealership is able to accept the vehicle.
  • Determine if an agent can pick up the vehicle (will be based on applicable government mandates).

2. You intend to purchase the leased vehicle through your dealership with HFS financing but are unable to due to dealership closure.

Contact HFS to discuss options:

  • HFS will allow up to a 15-day grace period after the maturity date, offer a payment deferral, or a lease contract extension.
  • HFS will recommend keeping the insurance and registration on the vehicle current until the purchase process is complete.

3. You are under quarantine and cannot return your leased vehicle.

A. Recommend lessee wait for quarantine completion prior to vehicle return:

  • Refer Lessee to HFS to discuss options:
    • HFS will allow up to a 15-day grace period after the maturity date, offer a payment deferral, or a lease contract extension.
    • HFS recommends keeping the insurance and registration on the vehicle current.

B. If lessee wants to return vehicle at maturity rather than extend the contract, refer Lessee to HFS to discuss options.

  • HFS will not be able to pick up the vehicle until the customer is no longer under quarantine.
